Public Transport in Dublin

We are greatly looking forward to welcoming all the delegates to Dublin next week. A number of you may be staying outside the City Centre and reliant on public transport for access to TCD. Unfortunately due to an industrial dispute, there is a potential for some public transport disruption on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September, when Dublin Bus are due to have a 48 hour work stoppage. If you were going to be reliant on bus transport within the city on either of those days, it would be best to explore alternative methods of getting to the venue. The other public transport options will not be impacted by the strike and may offer an alternative.Details are provided below.

The DART rail service serves both sides of the city on a mainly coastal route, you can access the timetable here:

http://www.irishrail.ie/about-us/dart-commuter

A map of the DART services is available here:

The LUAS light rail (Tram) system is another option and you can access the timetable here:

A map of the stations the LUAS serves is here:

And finally, Dublin Bus will be operation for the Thursday and Sunday of the Conference. Please be aware that Sunday service times are different for the majority of Dublin public transport options. You can access the Dublin Bus routeplanner here:

Dubin Bus airport services:

Aircoach airport services:

A wide range of taxi services are also available, and the City Centre is well served with taxi ranks which you can queue for. To take taxis into the City Centre you will likely have to book one in advance, which your Hotel will usually be happy to do for you. Alternatively, you can do so via sites such as the NRC Taxi site here:

Fields of Conflict 2016 Programme

The Fields of Conflict 2016 Programme is now available from the Conference website, and you can view it here. We have some excellent papers to look forward to over the three days of talks, with speakers from across Europe and the Americas discussing their work on sites throughout the Globe. In addition to the talks, there will also be a reception at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, the home of the country’s major military collections, and opportunities for delegates to take guided tours of some of the locations associated with the 1916 Rising in Dublin. The Conference will conclude with a field trip on Sunday 25th September, which will take in sites such as Faughart Hill (a key location in the Bruce invasion of Ireland) and the Boyne battlefield (1690). A reminder that all delegates need to register for the Conference; details on how to do so can be found here.

Conference Paper Submission Deadline

Just a reminder for those presenting that the deadline for receipt of written papers to the organisers is 24th June 2016. The written papers should be the approximate length of your 20 minute presentation, c.2500 words. It is preferable for references to be included at submission stage (Harvard Style) but in cases where this is not possible they can be included at a later date. Thanks to all those speakers who have forwarded their papers so far!

A Note on Potential Accomodation in Dublin

There are many choices of accommodation including hotels, guest houses (Bed and Breakfasts) as well as renting a shared house for the duration of your stay. Some of these can be quite large with a number of bedrooms and can work out to very competitively priced when a group is willing to share. One of the best ways of finding all of the above is through Tripadvisor. For example, holiday lets can be found on the following link. State number of rooms required and check the prices.

We also have a list of the Trinity rate hotels here.

For those of you presenting, a reminder that the deadline for receipt of written papers to the organisers is 24th June 2016. Looking forward to seeing you all in Dublin!

Fields of Conflict Update

On behalf of the submissions’ panel for Fields of Conflict 2016, we would like to thank everyone who submitted proposals for the Conference. The number and quality of the abstracts we received was excellent, and we had some very tough decisions to make in terms of selection. Emails were circulated to all those who submitted early in March- if you have not received an email from us it may have got trapped in spam, so if that is the case please email fieldsofconflict2016@gmail.com for an update.

For those who were successful, just to reiterate that final acceptance is dependent on both paying the conference fee (details to follow on the website in the coming days) and upon submission of your written proposal. It would be greatly appreciated if you could submit this to the panel by 24th June 2016. More details will follow as we have them, but in the meantime thanks to everyone for participating!

Call for Papers Update

The organisers would like to thank everyone who submitted proposals for Fields of Conflict 2016. Due to the large volume of submissions the organising committee are still working their way through them and by necessity have had to extend the date for notification of acceptance from 1st February to 29th February. We apologise if this causes any inconvenience. There will be a commensurate extension to the 22nd May deadline for full written papers, which will now be changed to 24th June. If you have any queries please drop us a line at fieldsofconflict2016@gmail.com
